Woods Hole's November Happens at Four Water Street Addresses

October 29, 2026

"If you can walk, you can dance!" That line comes from the Falmouth Cultural Council's listing for the Woods Hole Contra Dance on Saturday, November 7. It's a monthly dance with live music by the Woods Hole Folk Orchestra. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for teens, paid at the door, and you don't need a partner.

The dance takes place at Woods Hole Community Hall, 68 Water Street. Four doors down at number 72, the Old Fire Station hosts a Día de Muertos remembrance the weekend before. Redfield Auditorium at number 45 screens a film on Halloween night, and Water Street Kitchen at number 56 serves fried chicken every Thursday this month. As the village's best-known science exhibits close for the winter, Woods Hole's public calendar shrinks to one short stretch of Water Street. WHOI, which runs the Discovery Center, has a hand in two of the four November programs: one is in its Redfield Auditorium, and it presents another.

What Goes Dark After Saturday

This Saturday, October 31, is the last day of the season at WHOI's Ocean Science Discovery Center. Its fall schedule runs Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., through October 31, except for Friday, October 30, when it's closed. The center's own hours table lists November through mid-April as closed. If you've been meaning to bring a kid to climb into the replica of Alvin's personnel sphere, Thursday, October 29, and Saturday, October 31, are the last two open days.

The Discovery Center is only one of several closures. NOAA's Woods Hole Science Aquarium is closed through early 2027. Its page, last updated September 23, 2026, says the major foundation work in the basement is finished. Staff still have to rebuild the seawater systems, reset the tanks and exhibits, and source animals before it can reopen. The Woods Hole Historical Museum is open to the public from mid-June to early October, so its season has already ended. On the restaurant side, Shuckers lists its season as spring through Columbus Day, which fell on October 12 this year.

That leaves no aquarium, no museum, and no hands-on science center open, on a street whose summer identity rests on all three.

WHOI Changes Roles

WHOI has a hand in two of the four November addresses. One program is in its auditorium, and WHOI presents the other one itself.

Redfield Auditorium, at 45 Water Street, is the venue for Mallory's Ghost on Saturday, October 31, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. The presenter is the Woods Hole Film Festival, whose calendar bills the night as "Dinner & A Movie: Mallory's Ghost." The film is Arabella Oz's 88-minute narrative feature, a drama and dark comedy that she wrote, directed, and stars in. A Q&A with the filmmakers follows the screening. The Falmouth Cultural Council listing puts tickets at $18 general admission and $10 for students and military.

The next afternoon, the Day of the Dead/Día de Muertos remembrance opens at the Woods Hole Old Fire Station, 72 Water Street. According to the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce listing, WHOI presents it, with sponsorship from WHOI, the Falmouth Cultural Council, and the Mass Cultural Council. Altar decorating starts at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 1. You're invited to bring a photo of a loved one for the altar, and there will be food, refreshments, and crafts. WHOI's venue page lists Sunday's gathering from 3 to 6 p.m., with more viewing hours Monday and Tuesday, November 2 and 3, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Cultural Council's listing adds Mexican music, children's activities, and storytelling. Admission is free and no registration is required.

The organization that closes the Discovery Center on Saturday opens an altar four blocks of addresses away the following afternoon. The building and the audience are both smaller, and the event is free.

The Stretch, Laid Out

Here is Woods Hole's public calendar for early and mid-November, organized by address instead of by date.

Address Venue What's on When
45 Water Street Redfield Auditorium Mallory's Ghost, Woods Hole Film Festival Sat., Oct. 31, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
56 Water Street Water Street Kitchen Fried Chicken Night Thursdays Oct. 29, Nov. 5, 12, and 19, 5 to 8 p.m.
68 Water Street Woods Hole Community Hall Woods Hole Contra Dance Sat., Nov. 7, 7:30 to 10:00 p.m.
72 Water Street Woods Hole Old Fire Station Day of the Dead/Día de Muertos Sun., Nov. 1, 3 to 6 p.m.; Nov. 2 and 3, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The building numbers run from 45 to 72. In summer, a visitor might cover that distance waiting for a parking space. In November, it holds most of what's on the village calendar.

A First Week Built on Foot

The busiest stretch is the ten days from this Thursday through Saturday, November 7. Every item below comes from a listing published by the business or venue itself.

  1. Thursday, October 29. Fried Chicken Night at Water Street Kitchen, 5 to 8 p.m.
  2. Saturday, October 31. The Discovery Center's last open day, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by Mallory's Ghost at Redfield at 7 p.m.
  3. Sunday, November 1. Altar decorating opens the Día de Muertos remembrance at the Old Fire Station at 3 p.m.
  4. Monday, November 2, and Tuesday, November 3. Viewing hours at the Old Fire Station, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  5. Thursday, November 5. Fried Chicken Night again at Water Street Kitchen, 5 to 8 p.m.
  6. Friday, November 6. Band night in the dining room at The Captain Kidd, 5 to 9 p.m.
  7. Saturday, November 7. Contra dance at Community Hall, 7:30 to 10 p.m.

If you'd like to begin November 7 on the other side of town, the Flying Bridge Restaurant at 220 Scranton Avenue on Falmouth Harbor holds its fourth annual Oyster & Sushi Festival from noon to 4 p.m. The listing says more details are still to come. That leaves time to drive back down to Woods Hole before the music starts.

How the Stretch Holds Through the Holidays

After that first week, the regular items keep the calendar going. Water Street Kitchen's Thursday fried chicken continues on November 12 and 19. Over Thanksgiving, the restaurant lists a take-home dinner with pickup on Thursday, November 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Its calendar also shows the restaurant closed for the holiday that same day, so confirm the pickup details with Water Street Kitchen directly before you plan the table around it. After New Year's, the restaurant takes a winter break from Friday, January 1, through Wednesday, February 10, 2027.

The Captain Kidd's events calendar already includes a New Year's Eve event on Thursday, December 31. Pie in the Sky is the steadiest stop in the village. Its site lists hours of 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week, and says it's open 364 days a year. When the Discovery Center and Aquarium are both closed, that's an early coffee and a walk to the water with nothing else to schedule.

The next change on this stretch is the Aquarium's reopening, which NOAA puts in early 2027 without a specific date. Until then, the village's public calendar lives in a community hall, an old firehouse, an auditorium, and a restaurant dining room, all within a few hundred feet. In late summer, Falmouth's two farmers markets kept going after the visitor events ended, and November on Water Street follows the same pattern. If you own a home within walking distance of Water Street, you already know what November feels like there, and that matters when you're thinking about its value. I'm John DeLellis, and I'd be glad to talk through how a Woods Hole home holds up once the exhibits close for the winter.
